Shirley Cao

Characteristics - Prior to Joey, Shirley is also one of the most interesting characters in the story so far. She is seen as a comic relief in the story - yelling at one place to another. She is one of Matt's new friends as Shirley had expected early in the story. This was shown from one of the earlier episodes, "I have a feeling they’ll have a bigger impact in my life later" which was proven. In her own life, however, she is a very close friend with Joey. As the story continues, it will be revealed that they won't be only two who is in their circle of relationship coming from Madrid Middle School.
Shirley is one of the few characters who uses common sense, but also has a little self-concerned ideas of her own.
Story preferences (SPOILERS) -
Starters Arc:
She is introduced during the scene where she and Matt accidentally crash into each other in the hallway. Soon later, she responds to Matt and Santi with the power to produce ice. She predicts that she will have to deal with their existence for a long time.
Dispel Arc:
Shirley struggles to protect Joey under the dangers of Jon. Furthermore, she needs to protect him without having to use ice powers. She continues to join together with Matt, Santi, Danny, and Yessenia.
Olympia Arc:
Shirley's role in the Olympia Arc was to protect Eidothea while on stage. Ropes will break and objects will fall. She decides to take part in this treachery before Eidothea, also known as Erica, falls under the depths of pain.
El Monte Arc:
Shirley returns to El Monte with all of her friends who possess strange powers. In doing so, she continues to struggle with her hidden ice powers. From there, she is unable to hide it from Matt's middle school friend, Sammy. She and Matt both learn that their powers become haywire if non-power users are told about the secrets.
Shirley finds Matt in despair, thinking that his powers are nothing but trouble. In order to make him feel better, Shirley decides to help him learn stronger skills to keep him up and running away from any more problems. This shows that Shirley does care about her friends even if she does not portray it.
Echoville Arc:
In the glorious arc of Echoville, Shirley marks as one of the most important characters. A book context focusing on Echoville shows that there is a destined ice princess who turns out to be Shirley, according to the Echoville world. In the Earth world, Shirley is only a regular student. So, Shirley decides that it is best to go against Echoville's destiny in hopes that her friends do not give up on her.
Forest of Emille Arc:
Shirley, along with Matt and Yessenia, journey together through the underground ruins of Emille to find a calcified girl named Rena.
Edmund Arc:
Shirley goes with Santi and Matt into Edmund for the first time and they all appear at the bus stop of Edmund. This area seems quite similar to the bus stop on Earth near El Monte.
Luther Arc:
She joins along with all of her friends to stop Luther from taking over the world. With her ice powers, she marks as a great contribute to the group.
Shirley spends more of her time with Jaime, bonding together. However, she and Jaime find out that Matt, Yessenia, and Alex are usually trapped in Edmund but Shirley does not know of another way to get into such a world. As Brandon appears with a dimension, she and Jaime go together to enter the dimension in order to save their friends.
Marconian Continent Arc:
In this arc, Shirley appears with Huy in the Ogre Forest. They are about to be attacked by ogres, however Yessenia and Alex arrive to save them. Shirley strives to find the telsi potion in order to cure "ugliness" especially on ogres.
In the Floral Waterscape, Van summons a snake that constricts Shirley. Shirley tells Yessenia to attack the snake even if it means attacking Shirley, but Yessenia tells her otherwise. This shows that when things get serious, Shirley would prefer a winning pride than saving her own life in shame.
Potrero Arc:
Upon entering this arc, Shirley teams up with Huy to battle William. However, she becomes injured and cannot fight against Huy who is being controlled by William.
Rowen Arc:
Shirley joins the main group to enter the Druskane Continent to stop Rowen. In Crestwood, Shirley meets an old 'friend', Marri. However, she looks a lot older than before. In Tigre Village, Shirley heads into the hideout to find a book on the Telsi Potion and its ingredients. Jennifer appears from behind and points a gun at Shirley, threatening to hand over the book. When Shirley leaves the hideout, she decides she must go to Dalstidia and help find the spirit girl, Thuy. After taking the Rainbow Mist, Shirley and her group arrives back into Tigre Village, but only Shirley is being brutally attacked because she holds the mist that Rowen wants. She contemplates on handing it over or not.
Sunlit Mayhem Arc:
In this arc, Shirley becomes one of the ten contestants to battle in the Sunlit Mayhem. She challenges Sharon Tam, one of her former close friends who is now suddenly her enemy without having any explanation as to why. In this battle, she loses immediately as she wonders why she can rarely win her battles. Along the arc, Marri appears to remind Shirley about Echoville's strange history with Rowen.
Elemental Challenge Arc:
Throughout the early challenges, Shirley and her friends who are stuck outside of the Elemental Challenges wants to infiltrate only to visit Shirley's friend, Emmy. As they enter, these students along with Shirley are banned from the challenges for attempted cheating. In the Elemental Nullos, Shirley bonds with Emmy and lies to her by saying she went to 60 different worlds (when she only went through 5). As the fifth match began, Shirley and Emmy were in a tag-team battle against Romeo and Johnny. They were only able to defeat Romeo.
Juvenile Arc:
Shirley appears in the Madrid flashback.
Covina Arc:
In the Covina Arc, Shirley finds out about Jenny's death, so she runs away from the group in her own shame, blaming herself that she was the problem of her Jenny's death. As she stops, a man named Flynn appears and they battle. However, Shirley loses and is said to have died due to her stopped heartbeating. Later, she wakes up when Matt arrives and it is revealed that she only froze her internal organs in preparation for her loss by Flynn. She also helps Matt fight against Alvin and Geddon. As they enter the capsule room, Shirley watches as Emmy vanishes into the Elemental Government. She assumes that Emmy will be immediately killed if she reaches the Elemental Government, so she goes through a tantrum. As she faints, she no longer speaks for the rest of the sophomore series.

As the story progresses, she begins to have an anguished rivalry against Huy Trang. She also gains a quick friendship with William Ni and Thuy Do and reveals that she has had a childhood friendship with Christine Phan. In middle school, Shirley was much closer to Sharon Tam and it was also revealed that she had a best friend named Emmy who is now in Arroyo High School.
