Characteristics - Matthew Tran is the main protagonist of the story. He starts off his high school on September 2007 as a 14-year old boy who seems to be a bit carefree about who he is. His hobbies are to draw and write.
Matt is the kind of person who acts before thinking. He would jump into conclusions whether a situation is good or bad which may cause him to make a fool out of himself.
It was revealed early on that Matt despises volunteering.
Every so often, he would joke around and most of the time, he would not notice that certain situations may be dangerous. He does not really take things seriously unless necessary.
Later in his second year, he begins realizing that his promises are more of his failures and he feels the need to continue believing in faith, however he also contemplates on giving up such faith.
Appearance - Matt formerly wore a larger-sized t-shirt with baggy pants that definitely needed a belt. He first let his hair undone. Now, Matt decides to collared shirts and his hairstyle is spiked up in gel. He often wears the opposite of the weather due to a strange habit. Plot-wise, he would wear sweaters even on hot days because of his fire powers.
Story preference (SPOILERS) -
Starters Arc:
Matt begins his journey, talking about how he is excited to enter high school as a freshman at the age of 14. After meeting Jen in the large gym, a big explosion occurs and he runs off on his own onto the blacktop outside. He noticed that there were flames. Being ridiculous, Matt accidentally trips on oil and faints. He wakes up and talks about what he saw, but Jen, Stan, and Kalpesh do not believe him. He then starts producing flames in private by accident and wonders what this is all about.
Identity Arc:
In this arc, Matt, as a beginner, tests his uncontrollable fire powers on several occasions. There is one difficult situation for him, however. What would happen if Matt's fire powers occurred while he was around other people? His identity is at stake.
Dispel Arc:
Matt meets a girl named Yessenia who warns him about a student named Jon who can dispel his fire powers if he tried to use them. The two students become friends in order to protect each other from dangers of dispelled powers. Matt also learns how to use fireball.
Arkon's Magic Arc:
Matt finds Yessenia lying on the ground and Yessenia introduces to him a new world named Arkon's Magic which is presumably Jon's world. However, this place is a home for all students who have powers. Matt is also troubled by the fact that he and Shirley ran into a strange man in the shadows.
Olympia Arc:
Within the Olympia Arc, Matt is objected to alter flames which is filled in a home of a chosen child, Eidothea. If Matt does not succeed, the child will die and the fate of Olympia, furthermore the fate of the future (Which is El Monte), will perish. Later in the arc, Matt adventures the underworld with Santi and Shirley in order to find Hades with the help of Jon who knows the way to the castle.
El Monte Arc:
This arc focuses more on Matt's continuation to use his fire powers. He faces plenty of challenges such as an accusation that Jaime cheated on a test or when Sammy and Venus are suspicious towards him. Joey is not the only one who feels the same as Sammy and Venus. Matt meets a baby chick and they become quick friends.
After Mariel discovered the forest, Matt and Shirley decide to tag along and explore the forest only to find a ruin where none of them were strong enough to fight the digicells. As a result, the flaming baby chick sacrifices itself in order to save Matt and his friends from death. This leads to a complete despair for Matt.
Echoville Arc:
Matt meets a mysterious girl named Winny who possesses enormous power. She says that she knows almost all about Matt and his fire powers even if Matt never met her before. Learning more about her, Matt is dragged into the next world: Echoville. This is where he has to fight Raiden and Shuttle, two strong opponents who uses lightning and steel. Later on, he is combined in a three-on-three match with Santi and Winny against Lamia, Olom, and Vialaro.
Jen and Stan also play a bigger role in Matt's plot within the Echoville Arc. Jen is accidentally sent into Echoville and Matt disapproves such fact. Furthermore, Stan is also involved where he earns the power to gain any weapon and armor at any time. This causes more conflict against Matt.
Lastly, Santi teaches Matt how to glide into the air using flames as jet packs under his feet.
Forest of Emille Arc:
Matt faces a dramatic problem where he loses Jen, mentally. Her memory has accidentally been erased and Matt constantly tries to refresh her mind. Aside from this, Matt is dragged into continuing with the Forest of Emille world.
Edmund Arc:
In the Edmund Arc, Matt travels together with Santi and Shirley and learn that Edmund may be 600 years into the future. They began searching the area to find that they are standing where the bus stop is. It is about a mile away from their high school. Even so, it is raining everyday and the moon is usually shining longer than on Earth.
Luther Arc:
Matt is explained about the truth of his fire powers. He did not get them from the sky, but rather from an injection that Winny used.
Matt and his friends travel into the dimensional portal linking to Edmund. This is the final Arc of his freshman year where he has to face the truth and end.
Escape Arc:
In this arc, Matt begins on a truck with Yessenia towards a concentration camp in West Bridge. Upon landing, they are split up. Matt is later called-in to talk to Lieutenant Braus about his birth records in Elsiya (although he was born on Earth). After watching Melanie Dawes get shot down, Matt promises to save Wisteria. In doing so, he decides to escape together with Yessenia after failing to defeat Lieutenant Braus.
He is later poisoned by a spider in the Junkyard but gets healed up on the next morning.
Enheizer Arc:
As Matt, Yessenia, and Jaime reach Enheizer, they enter a hotel. Matt follows Yessenia to the headquarters to find Jaime only to get beat down and gain his fire powers again.
Save Miki Arc:
Matt returns to El Monte and somehow finds Nix, a baby bird, often to be mistaken as a chicken, hiding in his backpack. Matt re-meets his old friend, Alice. Although they did not have a pleasant past together, Matt decides to help her save Miki from Tony back in the headquarters.
Marconian Continent Arc:
Matt and Venus join together to chase after Jaime. They first enter a Floyde ship piloted by Omar and controlled by William. After making a ruckus, the Floyde ship crashes right into the Nerim Lake and Matt and Venus decide to climb the waterfall to get to Melvin. After failing to find Jaime in Melvin, Matt and Venus decide to enter the elevator boat back down to the Nerim Lake with the help of Omar.
In the elevator boat, Matt goes alone into the engine room and becomes trapped by soldiers on both ends. In rage, Matt's aura turns orange and with this rage, he makes it easy to destroy every single soldier in his way. From behind, Omar attacks him so that his rage can stop, and so Matt faints.
When Matt wakes up, only Venus is with him. They leave the Nerim Lake and head for Elk Village where they meet Amy and Bunhong. Matt also confronts Jenny and Michael later. When Matt refuses to listen to Michael's plan, Michael heads for the Boral Marshes which makes Matt and Amy chase after him.
In the Boral Marshes, the two students are told to stop the Grand Cradle from continuing by entering the Plaines Triangle. After being successful, they decide to head to the Death Maze where they rejoice with Yessenia and Alex's group. In the rejoice, they all head west into the String River to rest before entering Wisteria.
Potrero Arc:
Matt is split with the group and first battles Shirley Ma (Shirl). However, Shirl begins to talk about her past which makes Matt talk her out of fighting instead of fighting back. After this, Matt heads over to the highway and tries to battle Tony, but fails. Tony tells him that Wisteria was already long gone and defeated, causing Matt to be in despair.
After Tony escapes, the group is in peace again, except for Matt.
Rowen Arc:
Matt, Alex, and Nix travel together with Rowen until the two students decide that it is a bad idea to follow him. Later on, Matt decides to enter the Tigre Village to stop the Peridot soldiers but he gets stuck finding the Bird's Tear in the Whistel Continent. Returning back to the Druskane Continent, he has fallen into the abyss with Jen and Yessenia. Later towards the end, he turns out alive and helps defeat Rowen.
Sunlit Mayhem:
Heading into the Sunlit Mayhem, Matt becomes one of the ten contestants and he fights Vialaro as a result. Strangely enough, Vialaro was meant to be in another world called Echoville, but students question why he is here. Towards the late portion of teh arc, Matt visits the volcano and admit all of his failures in his past. At this point, Nix returns to him with complete trust this time.
Elemental Challenge:
In this arc, Matt and his other five friends walk past a bridge only to find out that they have already activated the Elemental Challenges. Matt meets a bunch of his old friends from middle school who are also participating in this challenge. He struggles to battle students such as McLovin and Tommy. He then hears a voice from above who mentions that Matt and Nix are banned from the challenges for having more than six participants. In confusion, he gets imprisoned in the Elemental Nullos, a grand jail cell for elemental users.
As Matt continues to wait, he is told by Colonel Artemis to participate in the fifth match. He tags along with Venus to fight Romeo and Johnny. After his victory, he is sent back to a small room with his other friends, but Venus remains missing.
Juvenile Arc:
Matt is shown in his childhood with his friends, especially Amii who continues to find more information about him.
Covina Arc:
In the final arc of sophomore year, Matt learns that Jenny had passed away and he decides to seek revenge on those who caused her to die. He defeats a bunch of men and is stopped by Dragon who happened to be from West Covina. As they bond, they travel together to warn the West Covina students that the plan to kill El Monte students is a big mistake rendered by Colonel Artemis. Along the way, they re-meet Michael, Maggie, Shirley, Sith, Jaime, and Winny. He also reads more about the hieroglyphics in the abyss.
When the group meets Claire, she tells a surprising secret about Venus. When being sent to the capsule room, every student returns back to the Elemental Nullos and then the six matches. Matt teams up with Jaime to stop Venus from trying to attack her own friends, but she runs off. In the end, Matt helps everybody reach the portal towards Arkon's Magic and tells his old El Monte friends that they must become more serious this time. He tells them to give him 365 days of training before getting revenge on those who had attacked El Monte.

Relation to:
Matt is best friends with Jeanette Phung and was originally also best friends with Stanley Yeung and Kalpesh Bhana. In his freshman year, he developed close friendships with Santiago Vallejo and Shirley Cao. Midway, Matt meets a new character named Winny Guan who reveals to have a lot of knowledge about Matt. As the story progressed, he bonded more with Yessenia Zhou and had difficult relations to Alex Wang.
In his second year, it is revealed that he had a troubling middle school with Alice Quach. When Matt decides to follow Rowen Bartholemute's advices, Michael Dang warns him of the dangers for following along. On the further end of the year, Matt rejoices with Tommy who gain nostalgic feelings about their past. During the last arc, Matt and Dragon begin as rivals, but they are forced to understand each others' difficulties and what it means to live. Colonel Artemis becomes one of his last relations as Matt suspects he may know who this man really is.
